Privacy policy

This policy explains what Where's the Snow at!? ("we", "us") collects when you use the site, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: we collect as little as we can, and we never sell it.

1. What we collect

Without an account. You can use the snow totals, the map and every station page without telling us who you are. We count page visits with Vercel Analytics, which doesn't use cookies and doesn't identify you, and with Google Analytics, which uses cookies (see Cookies below). Your browser keeps a couple of settings for you, such as your home Region on the map and the last announcement you closed; these stay in your browser and aren't sent to us.

With an account. Your email address and password (stored scrambled, so we can't read it), your saved locations, your powder alerts, your home Region on the map, the avatar you picked, your email preferences (including your alert report times and time zone, and when you agreed to news emails), and when you accepted our Terms.

When you send feedback. Your message and our replies, the page you sent it from, the station if there was one, and your browser type (for example "Chrome on Android"), which helps us fix bugs.

When something goes wrong. Our error log records what failed and on which page. If you were signed in, it also records your account ID.

2. How we use it

To run your account, keep your saved locations and alerts, send you emails you asked for (such as sign-in codes and, once they launch, powder alerts), answer your feedback, fix problems and keep the site safe from abuse.

We don't sell your information or track you across other sites.

3. Ads

We show Ads from local businesses to signed-out visitors and Free users. We count how often each Ad is seen and clicked, and which page a click came from. That count isn't linked to you, and Advertisers only get totals. While you browse, your browser remembers which Ads it has already counted, so each one counts once per visit. We don't use ad networks or ad cookies, and we don't sell your information.

4. Cookies

We use cookies to keep you signed in, and Google Analytics sets cookies to count visits and see how people use the site (for example, which pages are viewed and roughly where visitors are from). We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't sell your information. You can block or delete cookies in your browser, and the site still works.

5. Who handles it for us

We use a few service providers to run the site. They handle your information only to provide their service:

  • Supabase: our database and sign-in.
  • Vercel: hosts the website and counts page visits.
  • Amazon Web Services: backups, station data collection and email.
  • Google: Google Analytics counts visits and how the site is used.

These providers may store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States, where it is subject to the laws of that country.

6. How long we keep it

Your account is kept until you delete it. When you delete it, your powder alerts stop right away and you have 60 days to change your mind by signing in. After 60 days the account, its saved locations and its alerts are deleted for good.

Backups are kept for 90 days, so deleted information can stay in a backup for up to 90 days before it's gone.

Error logs are kept for 90 days.

Feedback is kept after an account is deleted, so we can keep track of bugs and ideas, but it is no longer linked to an email address.

7. Your choices

You can see and change your saved locations and alerts in your Account, and delete your account under Account → Delete account.

To get a copy of your information, correct it, or ask a question about it, contact us. If you're not happy with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.

8. Children

Accounts are for people 13 and older. If you're under 13, please don't create an account.

9. Security

Your information is sent over encrypted connections, and only the people who run the site can see account and feedback details. No system is perfectly secure, but if something ever goes wrong with your information, we will tell you.

10. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change affects how we use information you've already given us, we'll let account holders know first.
